Where the metal is trading
Bullion and common coins follow the live market, so the figure moves through the day. A real quantity of clean, familiar material prices tighter than a scattering of odds and ends.
How thin the year was
Scarcity is what lifts a coin off its melt value. Years that were struck light, or that simply did not survive in numbers, carry premiums that have nothing to do with weight.
How it came through the decades
Condition multiplies scarcity. A holdered coin arrives with that already settled. A raw one gets graded conservatively here, because if we are wrong about it that is our problem, not yours.
Same silver, different money
Two Morgan dollars can hold an identical amount of silver and be worth nothing alike. One is a common year, circulated, and trades near its metal. The other was struck thin and rarely comes up, so collectors pay a large multiple for it. Weigh them together and exactly one of those coins gets paid correctly.

Should I clean the coins up first?
No, and this is the one that costs people real money. Cleaning strips the original surface collectors pay a premium for and it cannot be put back. A coin that looks brighter to you routinely sells for a fraction of what it would have. Bring everything untouched.
How would I know if any of it is valuable?
It comes down to metal content, year and mint mark, condition, and how many are still around. None of that has to be sorted out in advance. Working it out is the appraisal, it costs nothing, and what drives each number gets explained as we go.
What is the right way to handle an inherited collection?
Bring it in exactly as you found it, uncleaned and unsorted. The whole thing gets cataloged, the coins carrying genuine collector value get separated from the bullion and face-value material, and you get an itemized written figure. Estates are a large share of the work here.
